Today, we break down the launch of the A&M MoCap Lab at Annapurna Studios, a moment that changed Indian cinema forever.
The legendary director S.S. Rajamouli (the visionary behind Baahubali and RRR) recently inaugurated India’s most advanced motion capture facility in Hyderabad. But he didn’t just cut a ribbon. He dropped a bombshell:
"We have already shot crucial, high-octane sequences for my next film, Varanasi, right here in this lab."
This means that for the first time, a world-class Indian magnum opus is being built entirely on home soil, using tech that rivals Hollywood’s best. Starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Varanasi is set to be a technical marvel, and it’s all happening because the technology gap has finally been bridged.
Before this lab existed, Indian filmmakers faced a massive hurdle called the Trial and Error phase.
Imagine you want to shoot a 10-minute action scene with a digital monster. Traditionally, you would go to a location, spend 25 days just "guessing" where the monster would stand, and another 40 days shooting. By the time you reached the editing table, you’d realize half the shots didn't match.
The result? Huge budgets wasted on travel, food, and crew for 65 days of work that could have been done better.
The new facility at Annapurna Studios, built in partnership with Mihira Visual Labs and Hollywood’s Animatrik Film Design, solves this perfectly through Previsualization (Previs).
