Have you ever dreamed of studying in the UK, working in Canada, or building a new life in Australia? For most international opportunities, IELTS is the key requirement. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency for individuals who are seeking to emigrate, work or study abroad in a country where English is used as their first language. It is the world's most widely used test of English proficiency for higher education and immigration purposes with over 4 million test takers each year. The British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English jointly develop and administer the IELTS tests.
How is the IELTS administered?
The IELTS test is available for people who wish to study in a country where English is the main language, work for an English-speaking country or are looking for employment in their home country where knowledge of English is a requirement for employment. For this reason, there are two types of tests available on the IELTS for individuals looking to pursue an academic program, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and individuals looking for employment opportunities.
| IELTS Academic | The IELTS Academic test provides proof that you meet the entry requirements for a university and can apply for a visa to study abroad. |
| IELTS General Training | The IELTS General Training test provides proof of your proficiency in an English-speaking work environment and can serve as evidence to support your applications for employment opportunities in an English-speaking workplace or organisation. |
IELTS test format
Listening (30-40 minutes)
Candidates listen to various dialogue and lectures and provide 40 answers to each. This demonstrates candidates' capacity to determine the minor details within a lecture, opinion recognition and the connection of topics.
Reading (60 minutes)
Three long passages are presented in addition to a wide range of question types including matching, true/false/not given, and summarisation. The section demonstrates candidates' reading speed, accuracy and understanding of the material presented.
Writing (60 minutes)
The first task is a report/graph (academic) or letter (general) writing assignment. The second task is the assessment of the candidates' ability to compose an essay on a topic that deals with a societal issue. This section evaluates the candidate's command of grammar, vocabulary, structure and clarity of expression.
Speaking (11-14 Minutes)
The speaking portion consists of an actual face-to-face interview with an examiner. This section includes:
- An introduction
- A speaking task with a cue card
- Additional questions that follow
Through speaking, the examinees are evaluated on their level of fluency, enunciation, as well as their ability to engage in a conversation.
Is IELTS difficult?
While the IELTS is not considered to be hard, it is assessed based on skill rather than understanding. Candidates who prepare in advance and follow the exam structure will have success with the exam if they understand the test structure and complete enough mock tests.
Many new candidates experience these challenges:
- Long reading passages
- Managing your time
- Nervousness when speaking
- Don't understand the writing task structure
However, most of these difficulties can be solved with effective practice and training.
